The aviation & aerospace giants, Rolls-Royce, operates with a firm sustainability approach. The company seeks to unlock new business opportunities and deliver more efficient products and services to accelerate the transition to a low carbon global economy by reducing the impact of its products. Due to an ever-growing population worldwide, subsequently it has caused an increased demand for travel, trade and energy as Rolls-Royce’s engines start to become part of broader, hybrid systems with lower emissions and lower environmental impact.
With 50,000 employees worldwide in 50 countries, Rolls-Royce acknowledges that its activities have a significant effect on society and the environment. With a vision to “pioneer the power that matters”, Rolls-Royce invests $1.3bn ($1.5bn) in research and development annually, with two-thirds of that figure devoted to enhancing the environmental performance of its products and reducing the impact of its engines. The firm operates with a TRUST model, which stands for Think, Read, Understand, Speak and Take Action. With a drive to investing in the development of high-level manufacturing and production environments which reduce the environmental impact of operations, Rolls-Royce invests £10mn in energy efficiency projects as well as overseeing a 20% reduction in global energy use since 2014.
A sustainability initiative in point that Rolls-Royce has undertaken is the 11,700 solar photovoltaic panels that have been installed on the roof and car park of its Seletar campus in Singapore. It is anticipated the solar scheme will save over 39,000 tonnes of CO2, which is equal to the plantation of over 1.5mn trees or taking away 4,770 cars off the road.
As a core component of how Rolls-Royce operates, the company is consistently evaluating its approach to governance and risk management in its sustainability drive. With the foundations in place for Rolls-Royce to become the world’s leading industrial technology company worldwide, the company remain determined to offer a cleaner, safer and more competitive product. Rolls-Royce push out of its comfort zone, embracing innovation and welcoming change. With 6bn people expected to fly every year by 2030, Rolls-Royce remains agile from both an environmental and strategic perspective.
