Gartner names Cleveland Clinic as leading global healthcare supply chain 2018

Cleveland Clinic named as the leading healthcare supply chain, as ranked by Gartner.

Gartner Inc released its 10th annual healthcare supply chain top 25 ranking, and Cleveland Clinic has skyrocketed to number one.

The rankings recognise organisations across the healthcare value chain and showcase those organisations that demonstrate leadership in improving life through sustainable costs and innovation.

“Healthcare supply chains today face a multitude of challenges: increasing cost pressures and patient expectations as well as the need to keep up with rapid technology advancement, to name just a few,” said Stephen Meyer, senior director at Gartner. “In order to be successful, supply chains must sport a specific skill set that consists of patient focus, collaboration and network visibility. The top supply chains in this year’s ranking have embraced those skills and excelled in executing them.”

Cleveland Clinic, one of the largest hospitals in the US, has leapt from its 8th position ranking in 2017 to the top spot and continues a hot trend of being within the 10 leading healthcare supply chains for its third consecutive year.

Cleveland Clinic’s model is built on collaboration across stakeholders. With a large span of control for supply chain across most areas of spend, supply chain is woven into the fabric of patient care, supporting a patient-first focus at the organization. Over the last few years, Cleveland Clinic has invested heavily into improving its services.

In 2010 the company announced that it had implemented radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology to transform its traditional manual, paper-based warehouses into state-of-the-art facilities using automated materials handling technologies to optimize the delivery of food, supplies, medications and surgical tools to more than 14,000 locations. This innovation was just the start of a major supply chain transformation, which sought to develop new system and inventory management in order to limit operational downtime and respond quickly to the changing patient demand.
