Amazon has announced plans to open its second Michigan fulfilment centre in Romulus, creating more than 1,500 new full-time in what it says will be a “highly technological workplace”.

Amazon employees will work alongside innovative technologies, such as robotics, at the 855,000 sq ft. fulfilment centre picking, packing, and shipping smaller customer items, such as books, electronics and toys.

“Our ability to expand in Michigan is the result of two things: incredible customers and an outstanding workforce in the state,” said Akash Chauhan, Amazon’s Vice President of North America Operations.

“We are excited to grow in support of the more than 65,000 authors, sellers, and developers in Michigan who are growing their businesses and reaching new customers via Amazon’s products and services.”

Michigan Economic Development Corporation Chief Business Development Officer and Executive Vice President, Jennifer Nelson, said: “Michigan’s logistical assets, reputation as a business-friendly state and the quality of talented workers offered compelling reasons for Amazon to expand its operations.

In separate news, Amazon has said it has more than 50,000 roles available to fill across its U.S. fulfilment network, and expects to make thousands of appointments at what it is calling the ‘Nation’s Largest Job Fair’.

Amazon Jobs Day will open 10 fulfilment centres across the US for candidates to take a tour, learn more about working at Amazon and see the jobs in person

Potential job seekers can apply for a role on-site at Amazon Jobs Day events, speak to company representatives and receive an on-the-spot job offer

“We’re excited to be creating great jobs that offer highly-competitive wages, benefits starting on day one and the chance for employees to go back to school through our Career Choice programme,” said John Olsen, Vice President of Amazon’s Worldwide Operations Human Resources.

On August 2, we are excited to host interested candidates to come learn more about the technology we utilise in our operations, see our dedicated onsite classrooms, meet employees and, if interested, apply for a job at our site and receive an on-the-spot job offer.”
