CMA CGM, the world’s third largest container shipping Group has announced the christening of the 11,400-TEU CMA CGM PEGASUS at Malta Freeport Terminal, Port of Marsaxlokk. The Prime Minister, Hon Lawrence Gonzi was present at the event, alongside his wife Mrs. Catherine Gonzi, godmother of the vessel.

“This christening is testimony to the fact that Malta is indeed part of the 21st century,” said Mr Gonzi.

Malta enjoys a strategic location on the shortest possible route between the Suez Canal and the Gibraltar Straits, at the crossroads of some of the world’s greatest shipping routes serving Asia, the Middle East, the Aegean, Adriatic and Black Seas along with the European Continent. This makes Malta Freeport Terminals Ltd (MFTL) a major container transhipment centre in the West Mediterranean.

With 10 ocean and 15 feeder services, up to 35 CMA CGM vessels call at Malta every week. MFTL is the main hub for the CMA CGM Group in the region.

There are strong ties between the CMA CGM Group and Malta, which have been present on the island for more than 10 years. The PEGASUS however, is the largest containership to ever sail under the Maltese flag.

“The ongoing investment by CMA CGM evidences the strength of the Maltese economy and its future prospects,” said Gonzi.

“This investment is in line with Malta’s objective of becoming a regional transportation and logistics hub and I thank CMA CGM for its commitment in improving the Freeport’s infrastructure,” he added.
