UPS to axe 1,800 jobs

UPS is to cut approximately 1,800 management and administrative positions across the U.S. as part of a restructuring plan

The company announced it is streamlining its domestic management structure by reducing the number of districts and regions in its U.S. small package operation.

UPS will reduce its U.S. regions from five to three and its U.S. districts from 46 to 20, effective in April.

The company added that as part of its realignment, it will expand its outreach by strengthening local sales and marketing efforts.

DIFFICULT DECISION
Approximately 1,100 employees will be offered a voluntary separation package. In addition, other employees will receive severance benefits and access to support programs.

UPS Chairman and CEO, Scott Davis, acknowledged that the decision to reduce its workforce had been "difficult", but added that the company appreciated the "significant contributions" of those employees affected.

"The new management structure creates regions and districts that are better aligned geographically," Davis said. "In turn, this will enable more local decision-making and resources to be deployed for our customers."

UPS confirmed that there are no plans to close any operating facilities.
